 South Dakota College Art Association Exhibition
South Dakota Art Faculty Sen. Stan Adelstein & Lynda K. Clark Gallery Closing Reception: Friday, October 23 | 5 - 7pm This exhibit features work from university and college art faculty and staff from around the state. A closing reception will be held on Friday, October 23 from 5 - 7pm. This statewide group exhibition is made up of 24 college and university art faculty members with a variety of mediums, subjects and techniques. SDCAA is made up of art faculty from colleges and universities in South Dakota. Every faculty member associated with a South Dakota university or college art program is invited to submit work to be juried for the exhibit. The exhibition is in conjunction with the annual SDCAA conference, held this year in Rapid City at the Dahl Arts Center. The SDCAA Conference gives art and design faculty in higher education a chance to discuss issues of teaching, scholarship and professional standards affecting the arts and faculty in South Dakota’s higher education. Equally important is the opportunity to meet colleagues from other institutions, creating an opportunity to form an outstanding cadre of teaching professionals and friendships. First Friday Reception: August 7, 6-10pm The Exhibit: Given the long history of artists who have created work about nature and their environment, Navigating the Natural seeks to highlight how artists are finding new ways to respond to nature today. The 29 pieces exhibited in Navigating the Natural as well as a juror spotlight exhibition of Nicole Pietrantoni’s work shows how artists critically reflect humans’ changing relationship to an ecologically complex and increasingly fragile world.  On January 1, 2014, Frank Juarez Gallery and Greymatter Gallery launched the 365 Artists 365 Days Project to the world. What started as a way to spotlight contemporary artists daily from across the country blossomed into getting the attention of artists from across the globe such as Germany, Slovenia, Australia, Russia, London, Israel and the United Kingdom.

   The Wind River Range [or "Winds" for short], is a mountain range of the Rocky Mountains in western Wyoming. The range runs roughly NW-SE for approximately 100 miles [161 km]. The Continental Divide follows the crest of the range and includes Gannett Peak, which at 13,804 feet [4,207 m], is the highest peak in Wyoming. There are more than 40 other named peaks in excess of 13,000 feet [3,962 m]. With the exception of the Grand Teton in the Teton Range, the next 19 highest peaks in Wyoming after Gannett are also in the Winds.
Within the Winds, numerous lakes were formed by the glaciers and numerous cirques, or circular valleys, were carved out of the rocks, the most well known being the Cirque of the Towers, in the southern section of the range. Shoshone National Forest claims that there are 16 named and 140 unnamed glaciers just on the east side of the range for a total of 156, with another 27 reported by Bridger-Teton National Forest for the western slopes of the range. Several of these are the largest glaciers in the U.S. Rocky Mountains. Ahkio drawings

Looking back reflecting on the week skiing into the Wind River Range in Wyoming, new work and images to follow. Wanted to share some snap shot from the expedition, and of the ahkio drawings made by pulling the sledge through this terrain. Here is a sneak peek. Map below indicates campsite for three nites of the seven day trip. I began working on this new drawing project over the course of spring break, which entailed creating a series of drawings through the use of a drawing apparatus pulled in a Paris Expeditions sledge. I have been referring to these as ahkio drawings. Ahkio is a Finnish term, derived from the Lappish word ‘akja,’ for an open, canoe-shaped sled. Diffused through Scandinavia, the ahkio was adopted by the military as an item of equipment for over-snow movement a vehicle of various forms, mounted on runners and often drawn by draft animals, used for traveling or for conveying loads over snow, ice, rough ground.  
This exhibition features the artworks of ten contemporary artist couples with ties to South Dakota. Each of the twenty artists was asked to submit a work of their own representing their solo practice. Each couple was also challenged to create a new collaborative work together for the show. Some of the artists have collaborated with their partners in the past. For others, this merging of practices represents a new adventure and challenge in art-making.

Taking advantage of a 70 degree day in December. Working on a new series of drawings while exploring the Wyoming, South Dakota state line. Mile maker zero, traveling to Alladin, Wyoming via Beulah and Redwater Creek Road.
