Ahkio drawings

4/21/2015
Looking back reflecting on the week skiing into the Wind River Range in Wyoming, new work and images to follow. Wanted to share some snap shot from the expedition, and of the ahkio drawings made by pulling the sledge through this terrain. Here is a sneak peek. Map below indicates campsite for three nites of the seven day trip.

I began working on this new drawing project over the course of spring break, which entailed creating a series of drawings through the use of a drawing apparatus pulled in a Paris Expeditions sledge. I have been referring to these as ahkio drawings.
Ahkio is a Finnish term, derived from the Lappish word ‘akja,’ for an open, canoe-shaped sled. Diffused through Scandinavia, the ahkio was adopted by the military as an item of equipment for over-snow movement a vehicle of various forms, mounted on runners and often drawn by draft animals, used for traveling or for conveying loads over snow, ice, rough ground.
