Exhibition explores convergence of sport and art

"Muscle, Movement, Measure," Michael B. Baum's exhibition of drawing, exploring the convergence of sport and art, is in its final week at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology's Apex Gallery, 501 E. St. Joseph St. and will close Friday. The exhibit uses 40 drawings from four different series, exploring the intersection of kinesiology, drawing and technology. Baum is an assistant professor of art at Black Hills State University and the curator for the Ruddell Gallery. Admission is free. Michael Baum left the plains of the Dakotas in his early twenties for the mountain ranges of California, Wyoming, Montana, Washington and Alaska. His interactions with nature and the wilderness became the impetus for his graduate studies in fine art, which he completed at Washington State University with an emphasis in drawing and printmaking. Michael is currently an Assistant Professor of Art at Black Hills State University in South Dakota, as well as curator for the Ruddell Gallery. 

Through rigorous physical practice he explores the intersection of kinesiology, drawing, and technology. He has an extensive list of exhibitions and was awarded a career development grant through the South Dakota Arts Council for a series of drawings entitled Heart to Heart.

” My work employs both drawing and kinesiology to examine the convergence of sport and art. I make work with the aid of drawing devices that have been designed to record various outdoor pursuits, ranging from long distance cycling trips, to backcountry ski tours. The resulting work exists as a series of drawings, an indexical record of my travels. The images stand as a document providing the means of engaging and communicating with both nature and the self through performance. “

Drawing Lines Across Mediums is an exhibition of drawings that reflect the ambitious, innovative and contemporary in drawing today.

About the Juror:
Olga Valle Tetkowski is currently head of exhibitions at The Drawing Center in NYC. She has held the position of Administrator of Curatorial projects and Curator at the Bard Graduate Center NYC, Assistant Curator at the Museum of Art and Design, Urban Glass and Paul Robeson Galleries at Rutgers University.

Art on the Plains is Plains Art Museum’s signature juried exhibition for contemporary art in the region, presenting a survey of media and styles and identifying emerging and mature talent. Now in its twelfth installment, the exhibition has become an important career builder for young artists and a point of pride among established artists. Juried by Aaron Spangler, a sculptor and printmaker who lives outside of Park Rapids, MN. He is represented by Zeiher Smith & Horton, in New York City, and Gallerie Michael Janssen in Berlin. His work can currently be seen in the collection of the MIA in Minneapolis, MN. This exhibition will serve as a cornerstone of the Museum’s 40th Anniversary celebration.

Some of the most dynamic contemporary artworks marry more than one technical approach. Creative Living Works is hosting a juried exhibition at Washington Street gallery that challenges the traditional boundaries of art making and involves multiple mediums. National, international and local artists will be displaying work that crosses creative fields in the subject matter, the medium or a combination of both.

The exhibition will be January 9 -30, 2016 at Washington Street gallery, opening reception January 9 from 7-10 PM. This opening will also be one of the first to be broadcast in virtual reality thanks to StreamVR. Watch the webinar recording to find out more about how VR will be used.

There will be workshops during the month, check out creativelivingworks.com for details. Closing reception will feature live music by The Steve Gutenband and The Breakfast Project on January 30 from 7-10 PM with suggested $10 cover. Best in Show and People Choice awards will be announced that night as well.

Rosalux Gallery presents “Open Door 11″
Opening reception Saturday, December 12th,  7-10 PM

Open Door is Rosalux Gallery’s annual national open call exhibition.  This year marks our eleventh installment which has been curated by Mia Lopez, 2014-2015 Curatorial Fellow at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.

ABOUT ROSALUX GALLERY

Rosalux is a cooperative art gallery that was founded in Minneapolis in 2002. The gallery is home to twenty artists whose work is well known both nationally and internationally, featured in various major collections, and who have individually received numerous prestigious awards and grant recognitions.  The gallery is located in the Van Buren Building in the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District.  Open Door is an exciting opportunity for non-member artists to showcase their work in the gallery.  Typically, this exhibition is reviewed and receives extensive press coverage.

JUROR: Mia Lopez

Mia Lopez is a curator and educator with over ten years of experience in museums and non-profit art spaces. As the 2013—2015 Curatorial Fellow for Visual Arts at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis she collaborated on exhibitions, programs, and catalogues including 9 Artists (October 2013), Art at the Center: 75 Years of Walker Collections (October 2014) and International Pop (April 2015). In 2013 she completed dual Masters at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Modern Art History, Theory, and Criticism and Arts Administration and Policy; her graduate thesis examined anthropology, museology, and performance in work by Guillermo Gómez-Peña and Coco Fusco. She also has a BA in Art History from Rice University.

Exhibition opens December 5th and closes December 27th.  An opening reception will be held Saturday December 12th from 7pm – 10pm. All artists and their guests are welcome.
